Barbara Muller - Dordtenaar of the year
Regularly the Netherlands is also rocked by news of abandoned babies, domestic violence and family dramas. Muller is fighting for children in such circumstances.
Finding babycorpses, probably tip of the iceberg
In a park in Alkmaar a baby has been found yesterday. According to the police it is presumably to a newborn baby. A passerby saw the little corps laying in a park and warned the police.
How many babycorpses must be found?
The Wednesday evening found baby in a park in Alkmaar reiterates the question how we in the Netherlands can prevent baby killing or leaving a baby.
”How much are yet to come, before the Hague is awakened?” asks Barbara Muller herself.
Lay abandoned should no longer be punishable
Information and reduce chance of dumping baby safe places. " there will always be people who continue to leave their newborn child or foundling just Informatie en veilige plekken verkleinen kans op dumpen baby. "Er zullen altijd mensen blijven die hun pasgeboren kind te vondeling leggen of zomaar achterlaten." reageert Barbara Muller op de vondst van een baby in een ondergrondse vuilcontainer in Amsterdam afgelopen weekeinde.
Baby dumped in dirt
Only a few days old baby has been left in the night from Saturday to Sunday in an underground waste container in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Because a casual passenger heard the newborn girl crying and alerted the police, the fire brigade could save her life.
A day later she is still ’in shock’: the woman who heard a newborn girl crying Saturday night in a underground dirt container at her apartment in New-West.
The first, much-discussed and much-criticised foundlings room is a fact in Netherlands. In Papendrecht mothers can leave their newborn baby anonymously. Initiator Muller is convinced of the usefulness.
Tomorrow the first foundlings room in Papendrecht opens, Groningen will follow later this month. In 2015, there will be rooms in Amsterdam and Utrecht.
State Secretary Fred Teeven of Security and Justice is not going to act against abandoned children rooms for the time being . In principle lay a baby abandoned is criminal but the legal options are limited in order to keep a private provision against where women can leave their child anonymously.
According to the figures in the Netherlands one child per year is abandoned. A deceptive figure, says Barbara Muller "Because it is that one child that is found alive. In addition, there are about six with whom we were late. Six baby corpses per year!"
In Papendrecht this morning a foundlingsroom is opened. Women in need who are not able to take care of their child, can leave their baby safe.
Tomorrow the first foundlingroom in the Netherlands will be openend. Not ideal for women who cannot educate their child, recognizes Barbara Muller. But perhaps the best possible solution until now.
In september two foundlingrooms will be opened in the Netherlands: one in Groningen and one in Papendrecht. Here women can leave their babies anonymously. Until now that was not possible in the Netherlands. In Nieuwsuur initiator Barbara Muller and the Council for criminal legal application.
Noord Hollands Dagblad
Opening new foundlings rooms are ’not a sufficient solution’ to the problem of abandoned babies. But new legislation to prevent abandoned children rooms is not necessary. This allows the Council for criminal legal application in an opinion to the Government, that was announced in Nieuwsuur.
